Princess Cruises to Triple South Australia Port Calls: 2026-27 Schedule & Adelaide Shore Day Guide
Princess Cruises will triple its South Australian port calls in 2028/29. See this season’s Princess dates at Outer Harbor, how to get from the cruise terminal, whether the ship waits for independent tours, and how much Barossa time a shore day really gives you.

Princess Cruises will triple its South Australian port calls in the 2028/29 season, an expansion the line estimates is worth $22 million to the state. Princess has not yet confirmed whether any of the extra Adelaide calls will be turnaround cruises. For passengers, more calls means more shore days at Outer Harbor, more people competing for the same tours and taxis, and more reason to plan your day before the ship docks.
We are Barossa & Light Cab Service. We have been driving visitors between Adelaide and the Barossa Valley since 2001, and Outer Harbor cruise pickups are a regular part of our week. This guide covers the announcement, this season’s Princess schedule, the cruise terminal, and how to plan a shore day that gets you back before all-aboard.
What Princess Actually Announced
The news broke on 13 October 2026, when Crown Princess docked at Outer Harbor to open South Australia’s 2026-27 cruise season. She carried 3,080 guests and 1,200 crew on a 28-day round-Australia voyage.

“Princess Cruises loves South Australia, as do our guests.” – Matthew Rutherford, Vice President Asia Pacific, Princess Cruises
Rutherford said guests are already visiting local attractions, dining at local venues and tasting South Australian wine. Tourism Minister Emily Bourke said: “Cruise passengers are seeking exactly what South Australia does best.”
Cruise tourism generated $198 million for SA in 2024-25 and supported around 613 jobs. That spending flows through tour operators, transport services, hospitality venues, retailers and accommodation. The bigger shift is not the number of ships but how far passengers travel once they get off.
Adelaide Cruise Ship Schedule 2026-27: Princess Calls
You do not have to wait for 2028 to see a Princess ship in Adelaide. Across South Australia, the 2026-27 season has 54 vessel visits from 13 cruise lines, running through to April 2027. At Outer Harbor itself, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield schedule lists 19 arrivals carrying an estimated 36,552 passengers.
Four of those Outer Harbor calls are Princess ships:
| Date | Ship | Passengers | Scheduled in port |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 13 Oct 2026 | Crown Princess | 3,080 | 5:15 am to 5:00 pm |
| Mon 23 Nov 2026 | Grand Princess | 2,600 | 5:30 am to 5:00 pm |
| Sun 14 Mar 2027 | Coral Princess | 2,000 | 5:30 am to 7:00 pm |
| Thu 8 Apr 2027 | Grand Princess | 2,600 | 5:30 am to 5:00 pm |
Coral Princess is on a 114-night round trip from the United States, so most of her guests will be seeing South Australia for the first time. Other ships this season include Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Solstice, Noordam, Norwegian Spirit, Viking Orion and Carnival Adventure. Seabourn Quest, Carnival Adventure and Azamara Quest are making their first visits.
Which cruise ship is in Adelaide today? Check the live shipping schedule on Flinders Ports’ PortMIS site or the Flinders Port Holdings app, which also has a real-time vessel finder. Times can change, so always confirm against your ship’s daily planner.
Those 5:00 pm departures matter more than the 5:30 am arrivals. Before working out the clock, here is what you will find when you step off the ship.
The Outer Harbor Cruise Terminal: What to Know
Adelaide’s cruise terminal is officially the Port Adelaide Passenger Terminal, but it is not in Port Adelaide. It sits at Outer Harbor, on Oliver Rogers Road, Outer Harbor SA 5018, at the tip of the Lefevre Peninsula. That is about 23 km from the city centre, with very little within walking distance.

Getting from the cruise terminal to Adelaide city

- Train: Outer Harbor Railway Station is about 150-200 metres from the terminal. Trains run to Adelaide Railway Station in roughly 40 minutes. On cruise days, Adelaide Metro staff at the station sell a $10 cruise Metrocard with unlimited daily travel on buses, trains and trams.
- Taxi: taxis use the rank at the terminal. Expect roughly 25-30 minutes to the CBD, depending on traffic.
- Pre-booked private driver: the best option for wine regions, groups, or anyone who doesn’t want to queue at the taxi rank on a busy ship day
No train runs to the Barossa. The metro line stops at Gawler, well short of the cellar doors, so wine country needs a tour or a driver.
Parking and drop-off for embarking passengers
- There is no parking inside the secure terminal area, only a few 15-minute spaces for pick-up and drop-off
- The drop-off zone is entered through Gate C. Embarking passengers must show their boarding pass and ID at the security gate.
- Limited free parking in the parklands opposite the terminal is not secured. Secure off-site parking with a shuttle is available through Andrew’s Airport Parking.
- Adelaide Airport is about 35 minutes from the terminal by road
Where to watch the ships
Not sailing but want to see the ships? Flinders Ports recommends Semaphore and Lady Ruthven Reserve as the best vantage points to watch cruise ships arrive and depart.

Ship Excursion or Independent Tour: Will the Ship Wait?
This is the question cruise passengers ask most, so here is the straight answer. Princess offers Guaranteed Return to Ship on tours booked through Princess. If a Princess-booked tour runs late, the ship waits. If waiting is not possible, Princess arranges transport to the next port.
Independent tours and private drivers do not carry that guarantee. If you book your own transport, getting back by all-aboard is your responsibility and your operator’s.
That is why an independent shore day lives or dies on its timing. We plan every cruise day backwards from all-aboard and build in a generous return buffer. That buffer is what replaces the cruise line’s guarantee.
The Shore Day Clock: Work Backwards From All-Aboard
Most passengers plan forwards from the time the ship docks. Plan backwards from all-aboard instead, because that is the deadline the ship enforces. Check your daily planner: all-aboard is usually 30 minutes or more before departure.
Here is a worked example using Grand Princess on 23 November 2026: docked 5:30 am, departing 5:00 pm. We have assumed a 4:30 pm all-aboard.
| Block | Time budget | Running clock |
|---|---|---|
| Off the ship and meeting your driver | – | 7:30 am |
| Drive Outer Harbor to the Barossa | 75 min | 7:30 to 8:45 am |
| Time on the ground in the Barossa | about 5 hours | 8:45 am to 2:00 pm |
| Drive back to Outer Harbor | 75 min | 2:00 to 3:15 pm |
| Safety buffer (traffic, roadworks, a slow final tasting) | 75 min | 3:15 to 4:30 pm |
One catch: many cellar doors don’t open until 10 or 11 am. An early arrival is useful for a Mengler’s Hill lookout stop, breakfast in Tanunda or a bakery run, but it doesn’t add tastings. Realistically, that adds up to three cellar doors and a proper lunch.
The buffer is the block you protect. If your all-aboard time is earlier, take the time out of the vineyard block, never the buffer.
Which Region Fits Your Port Day?
The Barossa is the best-known name, but it is not always the best choice for a short call.
| Region | Allow from Outer Harbor (each way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Barossa Valley | 70-80 min | Shiraz, heritage cellar doors such as Seppeltsfield, longer port calls |
| McLaren Vale | 55-65 min | Grenache and Shiraz near the coast, mid-length calls |
| Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf | 45-55 min | Cool-climate wine, German heritage village, Mount Lofty views |
| Adelaide CBD and Glenelg | 25-35 min | Short calls, Central Market, beach time |
Rule of thumb: if your usable time ashore is under about eight hours, the Barossa will feel rushed. Choose McLaren Vale or the Adelaide Hills instead.
Once you have picked a region, the next decision is whether to join a shared tour or book a private vehicle. For groups, that choice changes the cost a lot.
Shared Tour or Private Driver? Do the Group Maths
Ship excursions and shared shore tours are priced per person. A private driver is priced per vehicle. That difference decides which option is better value.
- Couples or solo travellers: a shared tour is usually the most economical choice. A ship excursion also comes with the return guarantee.
- Groups of four to seven: run the numbers. Shared Barossa shore excursions are advertised from around A$215 per person, which is $860 for four people or $1,290 for six
- Groups of eight or more: a private minibus usually wins on both price and flexibility
A private booking also lets you set the clock. You choose the cellar doors, the lunch stop and the return time, and you are not waiting on 20 other passengers at each stop.
Our fleet covers most group sizes: hybrid sedans for four, 7-seater maxis, 13-seater minibuses, and 24- and 42-seat coaches for larger groups. Hourly rates start from $60. See our rates page for current pricing by vehicle.
Starting or Ending Your Cruise in Adelaide
Most Princess calls at Outer Harbor are transit visits, where passengers spend a day ashore and sail on. The 13 October Crown Princess call was listed as a partial visit, meaning some passengers began or finished their voyage in Adelaide.
Princess hasn’t said whether the tripled 2028/29 program will include full turnaround cruises from Adelaide. Watch for the full program on 28 October 2026.
If you are joining or leaving a ship here, plan the transfer as carefully as the cruise:
- From Adelaide Airport: about 35 minutes to the terminal. Allow extra time for embarkation security.
- From the Barossa: many passengers add a night or two in wine country before or after the cruise. We run airport transfers and terminal drop-offs directly from Barossa accommodation.
- Luggage: tell us your bag count when booking so we send a vehicle with room for it
How We Run an Outer Harbor Pickup
We have run a local cab service in the Barossa since 2001. We are rated 4.9 from 331 reviews and hold a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award for 2025. For a cruise day, the routine is simple:
- Book before you sail with your ship name, docking date and all-aboard time
- We meet you at the Outer Harbor terminal, so there is no queue at the taxi rank
- We plan the day backwards from all-aboard, using the clock above
- You taste, and we drive. Wine purchases go in the vehicle, not in your arms
- We return you with time to spare before all-aboard
See our Outer Harbor cruise ship services for the full details, or build a custom day with our private Barossa Valley wine tours or McLaren Vale wine tours.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will Princess Cruises triple its South Australian port calls?
From the 2028/29 season. Princess will announce its full 2028/29 Australian program on 28 October 2026, with itineraries going on sale on 11 November 2026.
Which Princess ships visit Adelaide in 2026-27?
Crown Princess (13 October 2026), Grand Princess (23 November 2026 and 8 April 2027) and Coral Princess (14 March 2027) are all scheduled at Outer Harbor this season.
What cruise ship is in Adelaide today?
Check the live shipping schedule on Flinders Ports’ PortMIS site or the Flinders Port Holdings app. The City of Port Adelaide Enfield also publishes the season’s arrival schedule.
Where do cruise ships dock in Adelaide?
At the Port Adelaide Passenger Terminal, Oliver Rogers Road, Outer Harbor SA 5018. It is about 23 km from the Adelaide CBD.
How do I get from the Adelaide cruise terminal to the city?
Outer Harbor Railway Station is about 150-200 metres from the terminal. Trains reach Adelaide Railway Station in roughly 40 minutes, and a $10 cruise Metrocard covers a full day of buses, trains and trams. Taxis and pre-booked drivers take about 25-30 minutes.
Can I park at the Adelaide cruise terminal?
Not inside the secure area. There are a few 15-minute pick-up spaces, limited unsecured parking opposite the terminal, and secure off-site parking with a shuttle through Andrew’s Airport Parking.
Do cruises leave from Adelaide?
Some sailings start or finish in Adelaide, but most calls are transit visits. Princess has not confirmed whether its tripled 2028/29 program will include turnaround cruises from Adelaide.
Will the ship wait if my private tour is late?
Not guaranteed. Princess only guarantees to wait for tours booked through Princess. With an independent tour or private driver, returning by all-aboard is your responsibility, so book an operator who plans around a return buffer.
Can I visit the Barossa Valley on a cruise shore day?
Yes, if your port call is long enough. Allow 70-80 minutes each way from Outer Harbor plus a return buffer. On a typical Princess call, that leaves about five hours in the valley, which is enough for three cellar doors and lunch.
Is a private driver cheaper than a ship excursion?
For groups of four or more, it often is. Excursions are priced per person and a private vehicle is priced per vehicle, so the saving grows with each extra passenger.
